A few days ago, I was asked whether the floor number (层数) is a consideration in Fengshui. At present, there are still quite a few practitioners who select or assess units based on the floor number. Briefly, the methods use are generally based on the Producing and Controlling (生克) relationship of the Five Elements (五行) to determine the auspicious floor numbers.

Selecting or assessing the Fengshui of units based on the floor number is futile and shows a lack of proper understanding of Fengshui. If it is futile, does it mean, then, the Fengshui of units located directly above or below are the same? Clearly, the answer is No.

In the Nature we live in, Space (空间) and Time (时间) coexist and is inter-dependent and this is also the reflection of Yin Yang complementary aspect. Fengshui, being inseparable from Nature, is therefore also about Space and Time.

Space (空间) is Ci Xiong (雌雄), and Ci Xiong refers to the physical landforms of Yin and Yang nature. Whether it is a landed property or a high-rise apartment unit, the physical landforms of Yin and Yang nature is about Emptiness and Solid, High and Low (空实、高低).

Though having similar interior layout, facing/ sitting direction and location of main door, do you think the exterior Ci Xiong (雌雄) of a unit on, e.g., 4^th floor is similar to units directly below or above, e.g., units on the 2^nd or 6^th floor? Observe with keen eye and one will notice there are differences.

Similarly, on the same floor, do you think the exterior Ci Xiong (雌雄) of the unit on the right is similar to the unit on the left?

It is not about which floor number is auspicious or better. Rather, it is the differences in the Space and Time of each unit that matters in Fengshui.
