Center of Property, The Vitruvian Man

AreaAWhen ascertaining the center of property, how does one factor in the protruding corner or space? There are various explanations in the open when face with such situations. One such common method practiced is omitting the protruding space if it is relatively small and factoring in the space if it is relatively large. Another suggest considering the protruding portion as an additional area and calculating the center of both areas to determine the common point of center.

Reasons given for such methods varies, with some suggesting that small Taiji (小太极) is unable to form in the small protruding space, or the small protruding space is simply negligible etc. Many explanations for these various methods are somewhat convincing or seems logical, with some practitioners even having dedicated sections in their published books on ways to determine the center of properties, providing even their estimates of what is consider relatively small or scientific methods for calculation.

Fengshui is based on 易理 and 理 here is not referring to logical assumptions or scientific calculations or theories, but on the 理 of Nature; Principles and Way of Nature. What sounds logically right may not necessary be the 理 of Nature. For many situations in Fengshui such as the situations depicted above, one need not first dwell so much into whether this or that explanation is logically convincing or whether the explanation is backed by scientific assumptions or theories. The best way to understand Fengshui is to simply first understand Nature.

I'm sure many would have recognized The Vitruvian Man drawing, by Leonardo Da Vinci. This drawing notably, relates Man to Nature. If there is one Man whose right arm is longer than the left arm, or has one arm only, or there is an anatomical protruding growth somewhere, in each case resulting in a disproportionate body, how would the drawing be? Do we, for example, factor in the anatomical protruding growth? Does the anatomical protruding growth belong to the Man? What are the implications if the center happens to be outside of Man?

I believe many would have the correct understanding and answer by now. And of course, the best way to know if your understanding is right is always through practical experience. I hope everyone can spend some time to understand and appreciate the thought behind this drawing, for this drawing can help one to understand some other basic key principles of Nature and accordingly, Fengshui.

Lastly, knowing how to find the center is one thing, but has anyone stop to ask why we need to find the center of a property or area? To obtain the 立极点 and know thereafter the eight directions (坎离震兑乾艮巽坤) for application of Fengshui methods, is the most common answer. Again, this is 知其然,而不知其所以然. The real question is Why and What is the 易理 behind?

要行道,首先就要了解道、自然界的道理,而不是用"理"来说服自己或他人。所谓各说各有理,唯大道之理有一无二。
